Dear Colleague,

Thank you for taking the time to submit your suggestion on how Cornell can reduce costs. As a result of your input and that of others at the university we have created a Campus Savings and Efficiencies Committee to follow up on these ideas. The project team includes representatives from the Division of Financial Affairs, Planning and Budget, Human Resources, University Communications, the endowed and contract colleges, and the employee-elected trustee and president of the Employee Assembly.

The committee has been charged with identifying opportunities to reduce the more than $600 million a year Cornell spends on non-personnel-related activities. There have also been suggestions submitted that have personnel implications. They have been passed on to Human Resources for consideration.

Eight subcommittees will focus on the following areas:

  • Printing
  • Utilities
  • Grounds and building maintenance and building care
  • Hospitality/catering/business meetings
  • Transportation
  • Information technology
  • Procurement
  • Other (business service center efficiency, budget, etc.)

Each subcommittee will consider your ideas for saving resources and identify the strategies with the most potential to be incorporated across the university. Look for progress updates at and in the Cornell Chronicle.

Thanks again for your assistance and your concern. We will rely on you and your colleagues to help us adopt new practices that help Cornell become leaner and more efficient.

Best regards,

Thomas W. Bruce
