Dear Richard:
Thank you for conveying to me GPSA Resolution 7 regarding supervisor-student relationships. Your efforts complement extensive discussions by Cornell’s Faculty Senate over the past year on this topic. Professor Michael Fontaine, acting dean of the University Faculty, has referred GPSA Resolution 7 to the Faculty Senate’s Committee on Academic Freedom and Professional Status (AFPS), which is chaired by Professor Elizabeth Adkins-Regan. I anticipate that the committee will consider and respond thoughtfully to the points you have raised.
I encourage the GPSA and Faculty Senate to continue direct engagement with each other on this important issue. An ongoing dialogue helps define and reinforce standards of acceptable behavior within our community even as we wrestle with the many tensions and complexities inherent in relationships between graduate students and supervisors.
Sincerely yours,
Hunter Rawlings
