Summary / Notes:
Dear Patrick,
My thanks to Valeria and the SA for conveying to me Student Assembly Resolution #39: Awareness, Prevention, and Training (APT) Measures Against Opioid Overdose Crises. I’ve asked Ryan Lombardi, Vice President of Student and Campus Life, to respond.
Sincerely,
Martha E. Pollack
President
Dear Patrick,
There is widespread agreement that access to opioid antagonists such as naloxone is an important component of a comprehensive public health approach to reducing the harms of opioid use. Naloxone is currently available via the Cornell Health Pharmacy and through emergency responders, such as the Cornell University Police Department, The Community Response Team, and the Cornell University Emergency Medical Service, including when those responders are present at on-campus events. In addition, Cornell Health hosted a naloxone training attended by nearly 100 Cornell employees last semester, who each received overdose rescue kits. Cornell Health will also explore expanded training options by partnering with community organizations (such as the Alcohol and Drug Council of Tompkins County). Cornell Health, along with campus partners in the General Counsel’s Office, Risk Management and Insurance, Public Safety, and Environment Health & Safety, is currently exploring ways to expand access to opioid antagonists and will provide an update to the Cornell community at the beginning of Fall Semester 2023.
Sincerely,
Ryan Lombardi
VP, Student and Campus Life
