Dear Sarah,
I appreciate the formal resolution expressing opposition to the health fee. While I understand many of the concerns you have conveyed, I have tried to be very clear that the health fee will be implemented in 2015-16.
A Health Fee Advisory Committee will be created for the purposes you requested, and will continually evaluate the fee. We will work with the Student Assembly and the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly as we draft its charge and membership.
The Student Insurance Advisory Committee considered carefully a variety of recommendations prior to requiring all international students to have CUSHIP. This policy was intended to address growing concerns over aggressive marketing of private insurance products to international students. Exceptions to this requirement can be made if a student is covered by a U.S.-based, employer sponsored, group health plan.
I also understand your desire for students to be engaged in decision making, and we will endeavor to do that earlier and to indicate more clearly when student input can materially affect the decisions.
Please be in touch with Vice President Murphy to discuss the matter of University Health Services audits.
Thank you for sharing your concerns with me.
Regards,
David Skorton
