    Dear Acting President Kotlikoff,

I would like to convey Resolution 48: Ban the Box to you.

This resolution is sponsored by Garrison Lovely '16, President, Prison Reform and Education 48 Project (PREP); Nick Raskin ‘16, Vice President, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Kristen Lovely ‘18, Programming Chair, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Drew Musto '19, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Sahil Suresh '19, Prison ReformReform and Education Project (PREP);Ron Baazov '17, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Noah Chovanec '18, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Sarah Dincin '19, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Alex Moon '19, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Alexis Rosenbaum '17, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Nicole Divittorio '18, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Matthew Clauson ’15, Co-Founder, Prison Reform and Education Project (PREP); Maria Chak '18, Co-President, Amnesty International at Cornell University; Matthew Indimine ‘18, Vice President of Outreach, Student Assembly; Matthew Henderson ’16, Director of Elections, Student Assembly.

This resolution urges Cornell University to remove the conviction question from its job applications. Specifically, the sponsors request that Cornell only inquire about applicants’ criminal histories during a background check after a conditional offer of employment is extended.

The City of Ithaca that recently “Banned the Box” on its job applications in favor of a conditional offer of employment approach. Cornell University should strive to be a fair chance employer as well.

In my role as President of the Student Assembly, I hope that the Employee Assembly also considers Resolution 48 whereas the content directly relates to matters of university employees.

Thank you for the time and consideration.

    Kind regards,
    Juliana
