Dear Jim,
Thank you for submitting the University Assembly’s Resolution 12 (Revised), Charge to the Cornell Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee.
Following the loss of two members of our campus community who were struck by vehicles at the start of the spring 2015 semester, I encouraged all of us to consider how we could increase safety on our streets and sidewalks. I am grateful to the Assembly for taking this concern to heart and calling upon the Cornell Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee (CBPC) to: strengthen connections between the CBPC, the Assembly and the campus community in order to increase awareness of traffic safety issues and measures; create a comprehensive bike and pedestrian plan that addresses the goals outlined in the resolution; monitor and report on the implementation of the plan; and advocate for investment of resources in traffic safety improvement.
I accept this resolution intended to produce a safer campus for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
Further, I commend the Assembly for developing the resolution in consultation with Bridgette Brady, Chair of the CBPC and Senior Director of Transportation and Mail Services, and Kathy Zoner, Chief of Cornell University Police (which always has been an active member of the CBPC). Both leaders endorse the resolution and will play key roles in its successful implementation.
Regards,
David
