    Dear Matthew,

On behalf of President Garrett, thank you for conveying the University Assembly’s Resolution 5, “Promoting Community Feedback on the Proposed College of Business.” We value the UA’s perspective on this topic of substantial consequence to the Dyson School, Johnson School and School of Hotel Administration communities, and to Cornell.

When we announced the proposed College of Business in December, the only related action slated for the January meeting of the Board of Trustees was to request that the Board amend the University Bylaws to formally recognize a new academic unit. President Garrett and I determined that it was important to engage the Trustees regarding this basic matter of organizational structure – a prerequisite for any formal movement toward creating the College – before deeply engaging with all constituencies. Because of the Board’s unanimous endorsement, we can now work fully and productively with members of the university community, knowing that we have an open path forward.

For the new College of Business to be truly successful, it must be shaped by the knowledge and ideas of its stakeholders, whose insights will help drive the planning process. We have established a number of committees comprised of stakeholders charged with clearly defined responsibilities related to issues of importance to their specific constituencies: faculty, staff, undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni. I have asked that a representative from the SA, GPSA, and EA be added to the appropriate constituent committee. In addition, we are providing a variety of opportunities for individuals and groups to give direct feedback. They are already meeting and moving forward in very productive ways.

With regard to our alumni, we will continue to reassure them that their school’s exceptional qualities will be maintained and enhanced by the integrated structure. We are confident that creating the College of Business will inspire new and increased support by many alumni as they learn more about opportunities for their school and the College’s tremendous potential for beneficial impact within the university and in the world.

Thank you again for this submission.

    Sincerely,

    Michael Kotlikoff
    Acting President
