My name’s Amelia Lyons, a first-year Urban and Regional Studies student in Cornell’s College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP). On campus, I’m involved with the Cornell International Affairs Society (CIAS), the Cornell Media Guild (CMG), and plan to volunteer my time as an Outdoor Odyssey guide for the incoming class of 2026. As one of four freshman representatives on Cornell’s student assembly, I plan to help enact change and enhance the student experience at Cornell, particularly for first-year students. I want to ensure that all freshmen feel supported through their transition from high school to college and have their voices heard as crucial members of the Cornell community. This includes advocating for fair hours and wages for all student workers, whether it’s through federal or Cornell work-study programs or otherwise. I also want to highlight the importance of freedom of speech on campus and use my voting power in the Assembly to ensure that every student who speaks up for what they believe in is treated fairly by the University administration, regardless of gender, race, sexuality, socioeconomic status, or political affiliation.
