Julie Carmalt

Julie Carmalt is Senior Lecturer in Brooks with health equity-, prevention-, policy- and practice-focused teaching portfolio that includes population health management; addiction medicine; mental health care; social care navigation; primary care around the world; healthcare marketing; and hospital sustainability.
Prior to arriving at Cornell, Professor Carmalt worked as a case manager of adjudicated adolescent women and coordinated a study of juvenile female offenders. Prior to that she developed and directed programs for children and adults with developmental and/or physical disabilities. Prof. Carmalt has even worked in the canyons of Southern Utah and Western Wyoming as a professional river rafting guide.
Outside of the classroom, Prof. Carmalt may be seen leading students on “yoga hikes” around Cornell’s Beebe Lake to promote health, well-being, and community connection.
She received her undergraduate degree from Humboldt State University, graduate degrees from the University of Utah and Cornell and her PhD from Cornell.
Candidate Statement:
The opportunity to serve the university via the faculty Nominations and Elections Committee means that I can utilize my connection-building skills and apply my commitment to promoting a diverse and just campus by supporting the committee in identifying, vetting, and nominating faculty to critical positions on campus. I plan to serve with an open mind, collaborative spirit, willingness to listen and desire to take into account the university's needs when nominating faculty.
