In my past two years as a member of the GPSA, first as a voting member for the Arts and Humanities and now as the Vice President of Operations, I have found the work that the GPSA does not only interesting but also important. The discussions we have and the decisions that we make in the GPSA influence how Cornell sees graduate and professional students and ensures that we are not forgotten. Additionally I have seen that there are ways that being on GPSA can have direct impacts. I have advocated for field based clubs to have more equitable standards with respect to acquiring GPSA funding due to their externally limited nature. I have ensured that the bylaws that GPSA follows are not only up to date with current practices but also usable and readable even to those without a background in the organization. Finally, in my time as part of the GPSA, I have learned that no matter how much we may feel cut off from the rest of the campus in our home departments there is a community of people out there who want to work together on issues that affect graduate and professional students and I hope to have the opportunity to continue to be a part of nurturing and growing that community.
