Summary / Notes:
Dear Acting President Kotlikoff, I would like to convey Resolution 39: Committing to Carbon Neutrality by 2035 to you. This resolution is sponsored by Student Assembly Executive Vice President, Emma Johnston, Environmental Committee Chair, Emily Dong, and Elizabeth Chi from KyotoNOW. The resolution seeks to uphold Cornell University's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2035, adherence to a clear timeline, and dedication to transparent, shared decision-making in reaching the goal. The sponsors believe that Cornell's goals should focus on sustainability especially considering Cornell's early choice, compared to other universities, to claim carbon neutrality. In 2007, President Skorton signed American College and University President's Climate Commitment. Carbon neutrality has been a cross-campus commitment: in the 2013-14 AY, the GPSA, UA, SA, and Faculty Senate affirmed the speed up of the Climate Action Plan from 2050 to 2035 with resounding support from constituents. The sponsors see becoming Carbon neutral by 2035 as an explicit commitment that the University should make. The resolution was approved unanimously by the Student Assembly. Thank you for the time and consideration. Kind regards, Juliana
