Winter Sidewalk Maintenance

  • Term:
    2025-2026
  • Assembly:
  • Status: In Discussion
  • Abstract: Students have expressed concerns over poorly maintained sidewalks in the wintertime, leading to falls and injuries. Whereas, during tabling, many students complained of poor sidewalk conditions that caused them to fall and get injured.
Whereas, students with mobility aids are having difficulties navigating campus with poorly maintained paths. This is not limited to sidewalks, and many students report slipping on the metal part of the Thurston Avenue Bridge.
Whereas, certain pathways, such as the stairs behind Annabel Taylor Hall, are not maintained during the winter, causing increased difficulties for students to get to class. Additionally, pathways that are reportedly maintained have excessive amounts of slush on them.
Be it therefore resolved, the Student Assembly recommends that Facilities and Campus Services increase winter maintenance, including but not limited to salting and plowing pathways.
Be it further resolved, the Student Assembly recommends that a rubber cover, or any other solution considered effective, be placed over the metal pieces on the Thurston Avenue Bridge to prevent falls.
Be it finally resolved, the Student Assembly recommends that Facilities and Campus Services have a forum for students and faculty to express where more winter maintenance is needed
