Introducing a Mechanism for Ensured Engagement and Outreach by Members of the Student Assembly

  • Abstract: A resolution introducing a Student Assembly Charter amendment to track Assembly members’ engagement and outreach with the wider undergraduate body.

    Whereas, Student Assembly members are required to perform outreach and engagement with constituents as elected representatives of the general student body,

    Whereas, Student Assembly members have hitherto skirted these duties, resulting in a detachment of the Assembly from the wider Cornell undergraduate community, 

    Whereas, the Executive Committee of the Student Assembly ought to take measures to enforce adherence to the Charter and have a standardized method in doing so,

    Be it therefore resolved, that section 10 of the Student Assembly Charter, Responsibilities of Voting Members, be amended to read the following:

    1. All voting members of the Assembly are expected to maintain a consistent standard of outreach and engagement with constituents. 
      1. Facilitated by the Vice President for Communications and Chief of Staff, each voting member of the Assembly must earn five (5) points prior to the last meeting of the semester to maintain their seat. These “points” shall be used as a tracking mechanism to ensure that existing charter provisions for member outreach is maintained. If a voting member fails to reach the 5 points by the end of the academic semester, the member will lose voting power, and after 2 weeks, the Assembly reserves the right to hold a vote to unseat the member. 
      2. The Vice President for Communications and Chief of Staff will track all members’ progress in a publicly available forum, its form up to the discretion of the same. 
      3. Points can be earned in a variety of ways. These include: 
        1. Tabling;
        2. Being featured in the This Week in the Assembly series; 
        3. Planning/hosting/collaborating on events that are explicitly connected to Assembly initiatives; 
        4. Participating in the Assembly Roundup; 
        5. Distributing flyers. 
      4. Methods of engagement or outreach beyond those listed above must be approved by the Vice President for Communications or Chief of Staff. 
      5. No points will be awarded for activity related to campaigns for election to the Student Assembly. 
      6. No more than two points may be earned in one week. 
      7. For voting seats filled through special elections or vacancies processes, and for Freshmen and Transfer Representative elections, respective points requirements shall be determined and formally communicated at the discretion of the Vice President for Communications.
