Dear Zora,
Thank you for conveying SA Resolution 37: Maximum Printing Cap. Given the complexity of this issue—including student needs, instructional practices, and system‑wide cost structures—I am returning the resolution to the Assembly with the recommendation that the SA work closely with the Director of the Assemblies to coordinate a meeting with Chief Information Officer Ben Maddox.
Students understandably use their printing allotment for a wide range of needs beyond course materials. While many instructors now use the Cornell Academic Materials Program (CAMP), it has not eliminated the need for students to print. Faculty may still assign or supplement coursework with Open Educational Resources, open‑content materials, or Creative Commons‑licensed documents that students may prefer or need to print. Moreover, not all courses are appropriate for CAMP participation, and some disciplines rely more heavily on printed materials than others.
CIO Maddox can provide greater insight into the utilization metrics and cost analyses that inform the printing cap. This will allow for a more detailed exploration of what changes may be feasible, sustainable, and equitable.
Sincerely,
Michael Kotlikoff
