Whereas, members of the disabled community require wheelchair accessibility to access buildings across campus.
Whereas, disabled community members have expressed concern regarding accessibility to buildings and handicap aisles due to bikes and scooters blocking these areas.
Whereas, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires ramps and handicap aisles to remain clear of obstructions.
Whereas, parking bikes and scooters on ramps and handicap aisles is illegal but not universally known by students.
Whereas, the Cornell Police can be contacted to remove the obstruction, but students are hesitant to do so because it requires additional time and resources.
Whereas, placing signage which expressly prohibits obstructing ramps and handicap aisles will serve as a low-cost deterrent to doing so.
Be it therefore resolved, the Student Assembly recommends that Facilities and Campus Services place signage which expressly prohibits parking bikes and scooters on all ramps and wheelchair accessible walkways across campus, or consider other solutions it deems effective, in order to protect accessibility and student safety.
